Our star pupil Jim Currie has been on an incredible journey since completing his training with ABW. Not only is he now a qualified fitness instructor running his own community fitness class, but he also continues to challenge himself personally and professionally.

Jim wasn’t always in such great shape. He says, “I can very much identify with the goals of Blueberry Wellness in creating health and fitness opportunities in the community. There have been times in my life when I have been very far removed from health and fitness. I have also had times when I was very overweight and unfit.” He decided to take up running in his 40s, though he admits he didn’t always stick to a consistent routine.

2024 is the year that Jim turned 60 years old – what better way to celebrate than by running a marathon?! In fact, Jim’s original goal was to run 10km in under 60 minutes before his 60th birthday, a goal which he referred to as, “60 under 60.”

He smashed this initial goal, but didn’t want to stop there! He decided to take his training more seriously with a renewed goal of completing the Loch Ness Marathon in September 2024. Preparing for a marathon was no mean feat, and Jim wasn’t sure if he would succeed.

Fast forward, and he has now completed not one, but TWO, marathons as of September 2024! The opportunity arose for Jim to partake in the Mount Marathon, taking place in Aberdeen in August 2024. And he successfully completed the Loch Ness Marathon in under four hours – an amazing achievement!

“I’m very pleased to have beaten the four-hour mark, which I would never have believed possible when I started these challenges. My original intention was to run a 10km in under sixty minutes,” he says. Jim has smashed his fundraising goals and is dedicated to donating the proceeds to ABW, where it can be invested in supporting community health and training new local fitness professionals.
